The “Support Program to SMEs of public works, maintenance of water distribution systems” was initiated and financed by the Centre for the Development of Entreprise (1,200,000 euros), which is a a branch of the European Union, with the support of the African Water Association (AfWA). The program aims at improving water supply network performance in seven target countries (Botswana, Djibouti, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Senegal and Zambia) by subcontracting maintenance tasks to national SME’s.
Solutions
Associated to targets :
- CS.3.2: Global capacity development programme
- CS.3.3: Water training centers / Global network of water professional training
- AF5. Develop and implement in all countries innovative financial mechanisms including taxes, tariffs, and transfers to meet the MDGs Financial requirements by 2015.
- AF8. All African countries undertake legal and institutional reforms to ensure accountability, participatory, efficient and sustainable WSS and WRM at national (2015) and basin (2025).
4378 - A strategy for supplying safe drinking water to rural communities where the groundwater is not suitable for consumption.
In Sri Lanka owing to the geology, rainfall patterns, land use etc. there is considerable variance in the quality of groundwater. Water quality issues include salinity, hardness, certain minerals such as Fe, Mn, Fluoride, agricultural pollution etc. The required water treatment technology is too expensive for rural water supplies and as a result, often the groundwater source is rejected. The North Central Province, a predominant paddy cultivation area, is plagued with chronic kidney disease (CKD). CKD is present in areas where the groundwater is hard and contains high Fluoride.
Associated to targets :
4354 - Household Water Supply Technologies for Increasing Access to Domestic Water Supplies
EMAS household water technologies have been developed in Bolivia, South America over the past three decades, and consist primarily of manual water pumps made from materials commonly available in developing countries, hybrid percussion-jetting manual drilling techniques, and rainwater harvesting systems that often use underground storage tanks.
Associated to targets :
4348 - The Albufeira Convention – a good example of bilateral cooperation in the management of shared river basins

Portugal and Spain share five river basins – Minho, Lima, Douro, Tagus and Guadiana – and for this particular situation the two countries have developed cooperation mechanisms on water management.
3250 - Water Supply Through an Integrated Water Resource Management for Mass IDPs Under Emergency Situation in an Arid Zone
Managing a safe water supply for basic hygiene practices for a mass of population under an emergency situation is not an easy task for the responsible authorities. However the Government of Sri Lanka together with the help of Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) managed the situation reasonably well in respect of the Internally Displaced People temporary settled in the relief villages established in the dry zone of the Province of Sri Lanka, in 2009.
Associated to targets :
6174 - A low cost measure to stabilize roads and to prevent landslides
Change in weather patterns, deforestation and settlements in high risk areas are reasons for landslides and soil erosion. The following solution describes a technical measure that is cost efficient and easy-to-implement. It is a way to prevent erosion on slopes and roads and to protect roads, houses and land from landslides. Used car tires are piled up along an insecure hillside. These tires are filled with a mixture of sand and cement to prevent the flow of water, which would affect the construction.
5366 - Latin American Network of Knowledge Centres in the Water Sector (RALCEA)
In Latin America (LA) there are a number of knowledge institutions with a high level of technical expertise and with a long experience in the water sector. Although cooperation between some LA research institutions and countries exists, this is not usually the case in the whole continent.
Associated to targets :
- 1.5.3 Cooperation mechanisms for joint management of transboundary aquifers
- Am2.2 Stimulate specific inclusion of water resources in new or existing national and local adaptation plans
- 1.5.4 Transboundary basins and/or aquifer systems institutions for sustainable water management
- 1.5.7 Mechanisms to share and monitor information at transboundary level
6150 - Providing Hope Through Safe Drinking Water
Today, across the world there are over a billion people living in extreme poverty without the basics. Millions have no access to safe water and many are dying from preventable and treatable diseases due to lack of clean drinking water. Water 4 Kids International is committed to respond to these impoverished children by drilling deep wells in remote villages throughout east Africa and central India. Water 4 Kids strategically drills wells in communities that are close to primary schools medical clinics and trading centers.
5841 - LifeStraw® Family – An Innovative household water purifier for the developing world
LifeStraw® Family is a point-of-use microbiological water purifier intended for routine household use in low-income settings. It treats a minimum of 18,000 litres of drinking water—enough to last a family of five at least three years—without any repeat intervention after distribution.
5786 - RuralCat, a Catalan Virtual Community for the Agricultural, Food-Industry and Rural World
The main aims of RuralCat is to encourage the use of new technologies in the rural world, help the sector grow by training and informing those connected with the rural environment and making them more competitive, drive the diffusion of knowledge and orientate users according to their common needs and interests.
