Agriculture is one of the most important sectors of the Indian economy, contributing about 17.2% of the country’s GDP (2009-10) and employing more than 50% of the total work-force. There are more than 15 million energised irrigation pump sets in the country extracting 90% of India’s groundwater and consuming 23% of electricity. The use of these two resources is either free (groundwater) or negligibly priced (electricity) resulting in inefficient utilisation of these two most vital resources. This is one the potential reason for the poor financial status of power sector and fast depletion of ground water table.
