A real-time operating DSS was  established so that instead of depending on water only in dams, it would sense field hydrological conditions and translate them into streamflow and water availability. In this way the uncontrollable water in the river system would be operated virtually, and allocated for use accordingly.  For example, instead of waiting for water in the dams to reach the SCC, inflow waves are detected in upstream catchments and routed through the system to forecast and show scenarios for which and when Eskom can have additional releases for its needs.
