Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) has been produced as a forage on most of the small farms established during the past 3 decades in the arid Western Region of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. Production was subsidised and large volumes of water, primarily saline groundwater, were used for irrigation. Recently the subsidised production of Rhodes grass was ceased, and ICBA is providing alternative production systems using drought, heat and salt tolerant crops integrated with livestock and improved irrigation systems. Model farms based on these alternative production systems are being established.
