This solution is about improving methods and effectiveness of communications amongst stakeholders (e.g. hydropower company, affected communities, local governments, key institutions, partners, catchment residents, etc.) on the social and environmental issues caused by hydropower projects through hydropower sustainability assessment.

The solution would be mainly implemented in Southwest China, where most of hydropower projects of China are located.

This solution will be adopted by other hydropower companies who haven’t applied Hydropower Sustainability Assessment in their projects. This will help them develop hydropower projects in a more sustainable manner. In the context that the stakeholders’ engagement is in good faith this solution could work best.

Advancing the objective perception of hydropower among the public, especially the directly affected stakeholders;
Further specifying the roles and responsibilities of hydropower companies and local governments;
Amending laws, regulations and policies related to hydropower sector.

This solution will effectively identify various stakeholders and get more useful feedback from different stakeholder groups, which would be taken into consideration in all stages of hydropower projects, thus directing hydropower companies to behave in a more sustainable manner, urging local governments function more effectively and raising the profile of sustainable hydropower among the public.

The laws, regulations and policies that would be amended.
Information transparency.

The application of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment is an important way to improve communications and engagement among stakeholders, which will largely promote social justice, equity and ecological sustainability.
