Abandoned Treadle Pump

How to create a sustainable market for low cost irrigation technologies is an important tool for dissemination of innovative technologies. In West Africa, the original success of the treadle pumps ( a small foot-powered pump to irrigate small fields) has turned into a flop: nobody seems to want such a pump anymore. What has happened?

The reasons for this is not fully known, but apparently many of these pumps have been given away for free, some of them were made by unqualified workshops with a bad quality, there was no supply chain and thus no maintenance when something was broken.

This is not to blame anybody, but to learn from the mistakes and to avoid future failures. Especially if we aim at national programs and large-scale dissemination programs it is important to learn from this experience, especially as there is a good market in other countries in Asia and Africa.
