The aim is to develop solutions that close the water cycle and make water reuse able. Through the More Crop per Drop (MCpD) network innovative concepts can be developed. Organizations from the various fields  (knowledge institutes, business and government) are able to explore the opportunities in the market for food security and water scarcity. The solutions that are part of the More Crop per Drop theme are technologies that serve at the intersection of water technology and agriculture & horticulture.

The initial focus is on countries with food security issues and water scarcity. A trade mission has taken place last year in Egypt where a workshop were held with Dutch participants from the MCpD network and Egyptian government officials.

The project is initiated by the various Dutch parties (government, knowledge institutions, business). The main driver of the program is from the governments side to contribute to solutions that tackle global water problems. For the business sector is is about exploring and seizing new opportunities.

Various consortium’s have launched successful solutions. IRIS is such an example where several companies from the various sector bundled their expertise. The IRIS project makes municipal waste water suitable for irrigation in horticulture by treating the water is such a way that nutrients  stay in the water. The Dutch government has made the More Crop per Drop theme as a structural part of their innovation policy.

Food production will become more and more strained in the decades to come due to a growing world population and rising living standards. Therefore ever more water is needed for the needed increase in food production. By developing and implementing technologies that create a higher water efficiency in the production process the strain on water can be reduced. Water efficiency is therefore an important part of water resource management plans. With the proven technologies from the MCPpD network significant contributions can be made.

The various solutions have concrete long term benefits; reduction of water use in the process, reduction in energy needs.

Success would foremost mean that various consortium’s have brought solutions to the market that turn into proven concepts. 

Countries or industries (agriculture and horticulture) that have to deal with strained water sources for the food production.

More Crop per Drop is a Network, which was started by the Netherlands Water Partnership. Since the theme and networks is now supported by several parties it is difficult to give concrete numbers about costs etc.

Not the network itself but concrete solutions which emerged within the network are replicated in other settings
