IRRI and its partners are developing water-saving technologies for rice, such as Alternate Wetting and Drying and Aerobic Rice.

In AWD, rice fields are not continuously flooded, but the soil is allowed to dry out for some days after the disappearance of ponded water before it is flooded again. The technique is widely applicable, easy to implement, and simple to adopt by farmers.

With Aerobic Rice, specially-bred rice varieties are grown juts like as wheat or maize, without wetland preparation, saturated field conditions, or any ponded water at all. Irrigation is applied to restore the field to field capacity once the soil has become too dry.
