Power generation using digestion gas of sewage sludge is promising technology for cost reduction of STPs operation by saving energy and for mitigation of greenhouse gas emission.

A great amount of digestion gas (Biogas) which contains methane as a major component can be regarded as important resource especially for the countries which are facing the increasing energy demand by the economic growth or seeking the technology for minimizing the emission of greenhouse gas.

Effluent contains energy. Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) receive large quantities of a source of energy: effluent. So why not use the energy that comes in at one end, to supply energy to processes that require energy at the other? This is already taking place at the bigger STPs, but could be rolled out more widely. In theory, wastewater contains 8 times more energy than is needed to purify it. Technically, it is possible to change the energy balance from -100% to +200%!

EXRT-process for increased biogas production from sewage sludge

The EXRT-process significanly increases the biogas production at WWTPs by inreasing the degree of digestion as well as a capacity increase by reducing the retention time in the digestion chamber. A higher degree of digestion also implies a reduction of the amount of residual sludge that needs to be handled. Secondary benefits will be less odor and a less sensitive process.
