The solution was implemented in the City of Gdansk (northern of Poland) located upon the Baltic Sea, Gdansk Bay. Nutrients can enter the aquatic environment from either natural or human-caused sources. It may not be possible to reduce eutrophication, caused by uncontrollable natural sources like atmosphere and surface runoff, to an acceptable level. Therefore, it becomes necessary to remove nutrients from more controllable human-caused sources, i.e., wastewater discharged to water bodies.

An environmentally and economically effective method of nitrogen and phosphorus removal from wastewater is the utilization of biological nutrient removal (BNR) processes which are effectively performed in activated sludge systems.
