Manitoba Hydro has partnered with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) as s foundation ‘Sustainability Partner’ to implement the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol on one of our hydropower projects in Canada. 

Our Sustainability Partnership is a multi-year engagement, comprising a training/capacity building workshop and an official assessment using the Protocol.  These activities include Manitoba Hydro staff, as well as interested and potentially affected parties, as a mechanism to ensure the best-practice knowledge about sustainable hydropower embedded in the Protocol is shared as widely as possible.  We are also actively working with IHA as a Sustainability Partner to promote the importance of sustainable hydropower both within North America and globally.

Our Sustainability Partnership is a three year engagement, comprising a training/capacity building workshop, an unofficial assessment using the Protocol, and an official assessment using the Protocol.  These activities include Sarawak Energy staff, as well as observers such as regulators or NGOs, as a mechanism to ensure the best-practice knowledge about sustainable hydropower embedded in the Protocol is shared as widely as possible.  We are also actively working with IHA as a Sustainability Partner to promote the importance of sustainable hydropower both within Asia and globally.

Hydropower scheme operations affect water ecosystems. To reduce the impacts, hydropower producer can use many technical solutions : fish pass, management of floods to transfer coarse sediments downstream or flushing of fine sediments with water release, increase of reserved flow …

Those technical solutions generate a loss of profit for hydropower producers (production of less energy , or production of energy at periods of poor market value for electricity). An economic solution has been developed to quantify this loss of profit and to compensate the producer so as to encourage him to implement environmental solutions.

Use of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol at Shardara Hydropower plant, Kazakhstan

The assessment undertaken was of an operating multipurpose hydropower facility in South Kazakhstan; the Shardara reservoir and hydropower plant (HPP) on the Syrdarya River. The assessment tool utilised was the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol (Protocol), which enabled determination of a sustainability profile for the project taking into account technical, economic, social, environmental, and governance issues. The Shardara sustainability assessment consisted of four stages: an establishment phase (pre-September 2010), a Preparation Mission (20-23 September 2010), the Main Assessment (18-22 October 2010), Report Production (November 2010). Follow-up dialogue took place through 2011. This solution contributed towards Target 5 by offering an on-ground application of the Protocol.

Use of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol at Binga Hydropower plant, Philippines.

This solution was a practical demonstration of the use of a sustainability tool in order to inform an upgrade of a hydropower project in the Philippines, in 2008.  This solution contributed towards Target 5 by offering a real-world trial of an early version of the Protocol and assisted in the Protocol’s ongoing refinement and application globally.

The assessment highlighted the project’s strengths and opportunities for improvement.  Based on these assessment results, the company commenced an upgrade of the project in 2010, which involved reconstruction of the intake and replacement of the units as well as rehabilitation of Binga to meet international standards through a new control system and various other mechanical and electrical upgrades.

E.ON has partnered with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) to implement the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol on one of our projects in Brazil, Turkey, India, South-East Asia or within the European Union.  We are a foundation ‘Sustainability Partner’ and are also participating in ‘Hydro4LIFE’, IHA’s European Commission-funded project to implement the Protocol within the European Union. 

Our Sustainability Partnership is a three year engagement, comprising a training/capacity building workshop, an unofficial assessment using the Protocol, and an official assessment using the Protocol.  These activities include E.ON staff, as well as observers such as regulators or NGOs, as a mechanism to ensure the best-practice knowledge about sustainable hydropower embedded in the Protocol is shared as widely as possible.  We are also actively working with IHA as a Sustainability Partner to promote the importance of sustainable hydropower both within the European Union and globally.

Hydro Tasmania has partnered with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) as s foundation ‘Sustainability Partner’ to support the application of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol globally via the development of training materials, and specifically at certain sites across several global regions including Asia and South America. 

Our Sustainability Partnership is a multi-year engagement, comprising the development of a training/capacity building workshop for global delivery, and participation in two sets of training workshops and unofficial assessments using the Protocol as independent experts.  These activities include Hydro Tasmania staff, as well as observers such as regulators or NGOs, as a mechanism to ensure the best-practice knowledge about sustainable hydropower embedded in the Protocol is shared as widely as possible.  We are also actively working with IHA as a Sustainability Partner to promote the importance of sustainable hydropower both within Australia and globally.
