Over the past few decades the international community has adopted an important number of MEAs responding to a complex set of environmental challenges. The implementation of these agreements, many of which are administered by UNEP, bears great significance for the sustainability of freshwater resources across the globe and can actively support the effectiveness of international water law.

C’est dans ce contexte que la Tunisie a déployé, en particulier depuis les trois dernières décennies, des efforts considérables qui se sont traduits par des réalisations physiques, institutionnelles, législatives, etc. dans le souci de limiter la dégradation des ressources et d’assurer une production agricole durable. A cet effet, une stratégie  de conservation des eaux et du sol (CES) a été mise en œuvre. Les nouvelles orientations de cette stratégie font de la conservation des eaux et du sol de véritables projets de développement agricole et de mise en valeur qui visent à la fois la préservation des ressources naturelles  et les aspects de production.

Implementation and eventual compliance with obligations stemming from multi- and bi-lateral transboundary freshwater treaties and agreements rest on domestic water legislation which must be supportive of, and conducive to, the attainment of those goals. Implementation and compliance also rest on the effective domestic-level administration of such domestic legislation.

The study established that there were approximately 333 water supply businesses in Australia with 14 different legal forms. These formal organisations and the informal institutions have different responses to the formal water law and policy changes. The responses of the formal organisations and informal institutions are instrumental to the success of the new water law and policy reforms under the National Water Initiative (NWI).

Planning small reservoirs for enhanced livelihoods in sub-Saharan Africa

This solution has both a technical/infrastructural and an institutional component. The solution revolves around an integrated planning of small reservoirs for enhancing multiple livelihoods of small-holders farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Small reservoirs (e.g. earth dams of less than 10 meters high) impound surface water flows and buffer against extreme weather events and changing climatic patterns. They procure a much needed source of water for millions of small holders in rural areas.

The IUCN Water and Nature Initiative (WANI): one of the IUCN Water and Nature Initiative’s (WANI) main goals is to establish political will and good governance in order to avoid and mitigate conflict and to build collaboration and consensus among all stakeholders on the basis of informed participation. Good governance is one of the main themes of WANI. Power neutral negotiations on water resources development are at the heart of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), a paradigm which WANI follows to achieve a sustainable society that cares for its resources so that water resources can be conserved and restored for the benefit of both ecosystems and humankind.
