Statkraft has partnered with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) as s foundation ‘Sustainability Partner’ to test the application of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol on one of our hydropower projects in Europe. Our Sustainability Partnership is a three year engagement, comprising a training/capacity building workshop, an unofficial assessment using the Protocol, and an official assessment using the Protocol.  These activities include Statkraft staff, as well as observers, to ensure that the best-practice knowledge about sustainable hydropower embedded in the Protocol is shared as widely as possible.

The Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Plant is the first large plant to be built in Brazil in almost three decades – it will be one of the largest in the country in energy generation. In spite of – and precisely because of – its location in midst of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest, it is an example that energy can de generated sustainably. In addition to the innovative aspects of the activities implemented and results obtained, the importance of this power plant lies in the fact that all activities are economically viable and replicable, creating new perspectives in renewable energy generation with sustainable water management in the Amazon.

Hydro4LIFE Project – Promoting the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol in the EU

Hydro4LIFE is a European Commission-funded project to assist the implementation of the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol in the European Union. The project is coordinated by IHA and will run from 01 September 2010 to 01 September 2013.  The support given to the Protocol by the European Commission is evidence of the international community’s belief in the Protocol as the world’s leading tool to assess the sustainability of hydropower.

Pilot Project for Solar Powered Desalination Plants using brackish groundwater in Abu Dhabi Emirate

The project consists of modular and semi-mobile photovoltaic solar cells power supply system with a capacity of 45 K Watt/hr working during the day hours only to reduce the cost of energy storage. The generated electrify is used to operate a high efficient RO desalination plant for brackish groundwater treatment. The capacity of each RO unit is 5 m3/hr with a recovery ratio of 60%. The system is provided with an ultraviolet filtration and disinfection system. The raw water is abstracted from a groundwater with a submersible pump operated by the solar energy also. Various alternatives and options for brine water discharge were evaluated and it was found that the optimal solution is use evaporative lake. However and some areas where the raw water salinity is less than 10,000 the produced brine water can be used for irrigating native desert plant species (salt tolerant species). It has been found that this system is feasible and the consumption of the energy ranges between 3.0 to 5.0 Kwatt/m3.

The State of Qatar has embarked on a programme, called “QATAR NATIONAL FOOD SECURITY PROGRAMME (QNFSP)”, for the development of indigenous agriculture production to improve food security for the population of the State. Any increased agricultural development will provoke a challenge to the water reserves. With depleting natural water reserves, and to meet agriculture’s voracious appetite for water, such a large quantity of water for the QNFSP programme has to be from Sea Water Desalination.

EDF has partnered with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) to implement the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol on one of our projects within the European Union.  We are a foundation ‘Sustainability Partner’ and are also participating in ‘Hydro4LIFE’, IHA’s European Commission-funded project to implement the Protocol within the European Union.  Our Sustainability Partnership is a three year engagement, comprising a training/capacity building workshop, an unofficial assessment using the Protocol, and an official assessment using the Protocol.

Landsvirkjun has partnered with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) as s foundation ‘Sustainability Partner’ to implement the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol on one of our hydropower projects in Iceland.

Manitoba Hydro has partnered with the International Hydropower Association (IHA) as s foundation ‘Sustainability Partner’ to implement the Hydropower Sustainability Assessment Protocol on one of our hydropower projects in Canada. 

Our Sustainability Partnership is a multi-year engagement, comprising a training/capacity building workshop and an official assessment using the Protocol.  These activities include Manitoba Hydro staff, as well as interested and potentially affected parties, as a mechanism to ensure the best-practice knowledge about sustainable hydropower embedded in the Protocol is shared as widely as possible.  We are also actively working with IHA as a Sustainability Partner to promote the importance of sustainable hydropower both within North America and globally.
