The MWO aims at contributing to wetlands, that depend on abundant and clean water resources, being better taken into account by decision-makers. The system collects and synthesizes information on a small set of wetland-relevant indicators organised along 4 main themes, structured along a DPSIR model: Drivers-Pressures-State-Impacts-Responses.

Wetlands are sensitive areas of exceptional environmental wealth. Some of them, such as wet grasslands and peatlands, are closely interlinked with agricultural lands. Farmers can play a relevant role in the conservation of these areas and in water management in particular: regulation of the water resources, flood control, leachate treatment, etc.

However, a lack of knowledge prevent farmers to fulfill these objectives, and agriculture is actually way more often a competing interest, if not a threat, to wetlands conservation.

This analysis has motivated the Haute-Vienne Chamber of Agriculture research programme, which aims at conciliating the upholding of agriculture in wetlands and the protection of water resources and associated environments.

The solution is a system of long-term field and remote-sensing monitoring of wetlands in transboundary upper Amur-river basin. Main tasks of the monitoring system are 1) to study influence of climate variability on upper Amur basin wetlands; 2) scientific basis for sustainable adaptation of national and international politics of nature resources management to climate change and biodiversity conservation.
