Within the ScaldWIN project (an Interreg IVB NWE project), the objective of the first work package entitled “Improving the ecological status of surface water bodies based on river ecosystem development and enhancement of biodiversity” (WP1)  is to contribute to the improvement of the ecological status of surface water bodies by jointly planning, implementing and evaluating a number of cost-effective and transnational actions concerning river ecosystem development. Different types of river ecosystem development projects will be implemented, which are often favourable to river continuity and hence fish migration (biodiversity), and a transnational inventory of fish migration barriers will be made up. By monitoring before and after the implementation of these transnational actions, the effect of river ecosystem development on the ecological status can be assessed. The transnational actions will also help define indicators which are best suited to assess effects and benefits of river ecosystem development measures.
